Adam Weiner and company bring a nostalgic cool to their very modern rock ‘n’ roll. “I think rock ‘n’ roll exists to be a red-blooded, countercultural medium,” Weiner says. “You’re supposed to get your hair messed up.” Art Dealers is the new album. “This record is all kink and no shame,” says Weiner of his tough, sexy and tender new album. “With Low Cut Connie, I try to create a safe space for you to just absolutely get your freak on.”

For years now, Low Cut Connie has built its grassroots coalition of oddballs, underdogs and fun-loving weirdos with songs that celebrate life on the fringes of polite society. The band’s infamously wild, passionate live shows provide a total release of stress, of inhibition, of shame, working up a primordial rock ‘n’ roll sweat for fans to get blissfully soaked in. The new album, and its full-length companion film, sizzle with that same cathartic sweat, reminding us that it’s time to get dirty again, and to feel alive. Art Dealers sits at the intersection of sleazy and soulful — a collection of risky, romantic, life-affirming anthems. That imperative comes through in the adults-only tone of songs like the opening Tell Me Something I Don’t Know, a sinuous, lurid rocker that sounds like walking through depraved Times Square in 1978: neon-lit and nasty with a snapping beat. The speedy, fuzzed-up garage-rocker Whips and Chains calls out what Weiner claims is a wave of neo-fascism, without ever losing its boogie rhythm section.

With two solo efforts under his belt and sold out headline tours in the rearview, a sense of keenly honed intuition guides his third full-length LP, The Art of Letting Go [Napalm Records]. “I’ve been going through a massive Bruce Lee kick, no pun intended,” he smiles. “His quote, ‘Be water, my friend’, always stuck with me. On a grander scale, it represents the record. It’s an exercise in removing prior restrictions and shattering the parameters I set up for myself as a solo artist. This is a rock record. In the past, I thought rock might be a little too close to the other projects. Instead, I just let go and embraced my essence as a singer, guitar player, and writer. This is who I am. This is my DNA. Instead of being apologetic and shying away from it, I’m letting go and being myself.”

Since her breakthrough in 2020, acclaimed singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun has been hailed by Rolling Stone as “Nashville’s most low-key musical revolutionary” and celebrated for her uniquely vulnerable voice. Oladokun has released two highly acclaimed albums—2021’s in defense of my own happiness and 2023’s Proof of Life—both appearing on numerous best-of-the-year lists. Oladokun’s forthcoming project, Observations From a Crowded Room, due out October 18, marks a significant evolution in her career. This 15-track collection—comprised of 12 songs and 3 interludes—reflects her growth as an artist and producer, blending her pop-folk roots with electronic and psychedelic elements. Solely written and produced by Oladokun, the album represents a personal and artistic turning point, crafted during a period of introspection and questioning. Her song “i see america” was a finalist for the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Award for Best Song for Social Change. Widely respected by her peers, Oladokun has collaborated with artists such as Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile and Noah Kahan and has joined Kahan, John Mayer, Tyler Childers, Hozier, My Morning Jacket, Pink Sweat$, Leon Bridges and Manchester Orchestra on the road.

From the off, Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory is sonically different from Van Etten’s previous work. Writing and recording in total collaboration with her band for the first time, Van Etten finds the freedom that comes by letting go. The result of that liberation is an exhilarating new dimension of sound and songwriting. The themes are timeless, classic Sharon –-life and living, love and being loved –- but the sounds are new, wholly realized and sharp as glass.

Reflecting on this new artistic frame of mind, Van Etten muses, “Sometimes it’s exciting, sometimes it’s scary, sometimes you feel stuck. It’s like every day feels a little different -– just being at peace with whatever you’re feeling and whoever you are and how you relate to people in that moment. If I can just keep a sense of openness while knowing that my feelings change every day, that is all I can do right now. That and try to be the best person I can be while letting other people be who they are and not taking it personally and just being. I’m not there, but I’m trying to be there every day.” Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory is a quantum leap in that direction.

“Kona Dub-Rock.” That’s how Pepper describes their blend of reggae, alternative rock, dub, island rhythms, and punk rock energy. It’s a sound that’s taken the trio from the Big Island of Hawaii — where vocalist/guitarist Kaleo Wassman, vocalist/bassist Bret Bollinger, and drummer Yesod Williams held their first band practice as teenagers in the late 1990s — to the upper reaches of Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart, where 2019’s Local Motion peaked at Number 1.

Nearly 25 years into the band’s career, Pepper’s three members are no longer merely artists. They’re ambassadors to a thriving scene. As co-founders of their own record label, LAW Records, they’ve enriched the reggae community worldwide by reissuing albums by Steel Pulse and Jimmy Cliff and releasing more than 20 other artists. As road warriors, they’ve traveled North America with The Wailers, 311, Pennywise, and Snoop Dogg, building a diverse community of collaborators and fans by blurring the boundaries that normally exist between genres. For Pepper, each new album is an opportunity not only to pay homage to their own reggae-rock roots, but also to expand the circle of connection, camaraderie, and synergy that surrounds the band.

Makai, the group’s newest EP, finds Pepper leaning even further into those roots. The record’s title is a Hawaiian term that roughly translates to “by the ocean,” and these six songs evoke the sounds and sights of the band’s island home. “Get Me Ready” (co-written by Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Kevin Bivona of The Interrupters) opens the album with a burst of sonic sunshine, while “Sweet Leef” sings the praises of herbal relief. Even the album’s artwork, which was created by longtime collaborator Ben Brough, pays tribute to Hawaii’s ocean culture.

Brough isn’t the only collaborator to appear on the record. Makai continues the band’s longtime practice of community building, with more than a half-dozen guest musicians contributing to various songs. Stick Figure’s Johnny Cosmic produces the track “Stay High.” Edley Shine of Born Jamericans appears on “Dancing on the Moon,” a song produced by David Foral of the Dirty Heads, while Iration — one of the first bands to ever release music through LAW Records — contribute to “Tides.” Together, those collaborators help shine a light on the extended family that Pepper has spent decades creating.

With new music and other creative ventures on the horizon, Pepper’s three members continue to fly the flag for a rich musical community built upon camaraderie and collaboration. There will always be more shows to play. More albums to release. More friends to work with. As Pepper moves forward, though, the band continues to look back, too, honoring the Hawaiian homeland that has always been the inspiration for the band’s art.

The pride of Belmar, Pat Roddy, has been playing music along the Jersey Shore for over two decades. He formed The Pat Roddy Band in the late nineties and has put out four CDs of original music. The band’s talented cast of musicians exudes a Jersey Shore soul vibe and has the musical versatility that appeals to a wide fan base. Whether he’s covering Springsteen, Southside Johnny, or Tom Petty at bars along the shore, performing at weddings, or playing for charity, Roddy and his band have always rocked the house.

Despite his musical accomplishments, Roddy is most proud of his charitable work and the support of his fans. When the pandemic hit and forced everyone into lockdown mode, Roddy sprang into action. He live-streamed a weekly acoustic show from home which, thanks to his fans, raised over $100,000 for various charities in Monmouth and Ocean County.

DEAN LEWIS
The Epilogue World Tour

DEAN LEWIS, an Australian singer-songwriter, is renowned for his heartfelt lyrics and emotive voice. Born on October 21, 1987, in Sydney, Australia, he gained international fame with his hit single “Waves” in 2016, celebrated for its raw emotional depth. His debut album, “A Place We Knew,” released in 2019, solidified his status in the music industry with hits like “Be Alright” and “7 Minutes.”

Inspired by the British rock band Oasis, Dean’s musical style and passion for songwriting reflect their influence. His music often delves into themes of love, loss, and personal growth, resonating deeply with audiences worldwide.

In 2023, Lewis performed over 100 shows across Australia, Europe, and the US. He recently concluded a series of global tour dates, including supporting slots for AJR Brothers on their US arena tour and James Arthur on his UK arena tour.

On May 30, 2024, Dean released his new single “All I Ever Wanted.” This latest release follows the success of “Memories,” which arrived in February. “Memories” has achieved notable milestones, including 35 million streams, inclusion in Hot Hits Australia, and reaching the Top 25 on the AU Radio Chart and Top 20 on the AU Shazam chart.

He has received several nominations and awards, including ARIA Music Awards and APRA Awards, highlighting his significant impact on the contemporary music scene. With his distinctive voice and relatable lyrics, he continues to captivate listeners and build a loyal global fan base.
