People’s Blues of Richmond (or PBR as they are affectionately referred to by their fans) is one of those rare three-pieces that somehow conjures the sonic power and visual intensity of a thunderstorm. Think Jimi Hendrix Experience meets MC5. They take psychedelic blues rock to a different level with a lyrical element seldom found in the genre. Think Bob Dylan writing lyrics for Black Sabbath songs. It’s hard to imagine until it’s right in your face. Then it’s hard to forget.

    Umphrey’s McGee

    with Big Something

The music of Umphrey’s McGee unfolds like an unpredictable conversation between longtime friends. Its sixparticipants—Brendan Bayliss [guitar, vocals], Jake Cinninger [guitar, vocals], Joel Cummins [keyboards, piano, vocals], Andy Farag [percussion], Kris Myers [drums, vocals], and Ryan Stasik [bass]—know just how to communicate with each other on stage and in the studio. A call of progressive guitar wizardry might elicit a response of soft acoustic balladry, or a funk groove could be answered by explosive percussion. At any moment, heavy guitars can give way to heavier blues as the boys uncover the elusive nexus between jaw-dropping instrumental virtuosity and airtight song craft.

    Karmic Juggernaut

As the name suggests, psychedelic/progressive outfit Karmic Juggernaut is an overwhelming force of sound. Formed initially as a quartet in 2004, the Asbury Park-based group has amassed a reputation for their eclectic style, musicianship, unique stage performances, inventive songwriting, and innovative solar-powered recordings using the Sun Lab Studio.

Karmic Juggernaut has been performing since 2005 with guitarists James McCaffrey and Randy Preston, and drummer Kevin Grossman.  Bassist Cody McCorry joined in 2012, and vocalist Daimon Santa Maria and keyboardist Jake Hughes in 2017.  They have released one full-length album and three previous EP’s, and have shared the stage with many major acts in the music community including Umphrey’s McGree, Bernie Worrell, moe., Keller Williams, Marco Benevento, and many others. Members of the group have been involved with many other acts such as Thank You Scientist, We Used To Cut The Grass, Ike Willis (of Frank Zappa), Remember Jones, Homeless Apians, Bumblefoot, Hive Mind, Bone & Marrow, Elevator Art, and many additional projects.

The band has just released their new full-length album, The Dreams That Stuff Are Made Of, a collection of thirteen unique tunes written by the group. Recorded and mixed at The Hangar at the New Jersey Shore, the new album is a departure from the band’s earlier recordings, featuring new frontman Daimon Santa Maria, keyboardist Jake Hughes, a robust horn section (Joe Gullace & Ian Gray), mallet work by percussionist AJ Merlino, theremin by bassist Cody McCorry, and an array of other instruments. The result is an vintage-inspired album with a postmodern view of psychedelia. This new record draws from an eclectic variety of genres and musical tastes, and touches on topics such as today’s political climate, B-movies, mental illness, and features satirical approaches of contemporary living.

    Lee Scott Howard

A self-taught guitarist and vocalist, Lee began singing and playing guitar after discovering he had perfect pitch at age five, and hasn’t stopped since. He started performing professionally in his teens and toured throughout the  U.S.,  along the way performing alongside Jason Mraz, Rob Thomas, Ben E. King, as well as sharing the stage with world renown recording artists such as Huey Lewis & The News, Clarence Clemons, The Turtles, Peter Noone, The Troggs, MC5, Lonestar, Leon Russell, and Eric Clapton.

Lee has garnered several songwriting awards, written and performed music for motion pictures, including Critters and Quiet Cool (New Line Cinema releases), as well as for national and regional television & radio commercials, plus numerous voice overs. He’s also appeared on WDHA-FM’s New Jersey Rock 7 featuring some of New Jersey’s best talent, and had a recording contract with Epic Records (Columbia/Sony).

Besides currently performing with The British Invasion Years, Lee is available for session work as a guitarist, vocalist, song & jingle writing, and more. Lee is a musical chameleon, able to alter his style to authentically reproduce many different genres, and with a four octave range (Mariah Carey squeals included) he specializes in vocal harmony.

Lee also shares his passion for music with developmentally disabled adults and gives of his time as a volunteer musician in Holiday Express, a charity organization sharing “the gift of human kindness” with those who might not otherwise experience the joy of the holiday season.

EXPERIENCE JANIS: a Tribute to Janis Joplin

    starring CC Coletti

    $20, 8:00pm
Doors open at 6:30, Show starts at 8pm
An authentic reproduction of Janis Joplin’s Rock & Roll show. Experience Janis! With a twinkle in her eye and that rasp in her voice, CC Coletti channels the spirit of Janis Joplin, belting out hit after hit in a heartfelt tribute performance. Her band of seasoned pros recreates the sound that defined a generation, slamming through classic 60s jams, laying down the soul, and conveying the tender ballads and old timey blues numbers that made Joplin a legend.CC discovered Janis Joplin’s music at the age of 13. As she tells it, “Me and Bobby McGee” was the first song she ever sat down and learned. “We had one of those little tape players, and I sat in the kitchen, jotting down lyrics and rewinding, over and over until I got the whole thing right,” she says. “I’m not sure why, but I was really drawn to Janis, even then.”CC and her band steam through the Janis catalog, peppering their hit-filled sets with some of Janis’ best deep cuts. Sights and sounds complement each other, as the stage is time-warped back to the psychedelic 60s, with tie-dye, lava lamps, and choice threads. A psychedelic visual show sets the backdrop for the band’s vintage gear, which provides an authentic sound as CC pays homage to her idol in the best way she knows how – urgently preaching the gospel according to Janis.CC, the show’s jewel and pearl, has a flourishing career of her own, including a string of successful solo recordings and 8 years on the road as part of rock icon Meat Loaf’s Neverland Express world tours from 2003 through 2011. She appeared on three of his DVD’s. Bat Out Of Hell Live With Melbourne Symphony, Three Bats Live and a documentary, In Search of Paradise. CC’s voice can be heard on Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell 3 album and Hang Cool Teddy Bear. CC was also featured as the opening act for Meat Loaf’s European tour in 2007. All the while, she never forgot her early musical inspiration and knew it was inevitable that she’d pay tribute to her childhood idol. THE DANCE FLOOR WILL BE OPEN FOR DANCING!

Rhythm and blues to rattle the bones. Sweet soul music to set you free. Grin wider. Groove harder. So goes the mantra of The Shady Street Show Band.

Shady Street has risen to become one of the Jersey Shore’s top shows to see, often including up to a 9 piece band on stage with a full horn section. Among their achievements include winning the Asbury Music Award for best soul act in 2014 and 2015 as well as a stint as the house band for the Stone Pony, one of New Jersey’s premier music venues.

The Shady Street Show Band’s original EP, An Almighty Noise, was released in July 2013. Their second album, Together at Last, a split with good friends and punk rockers Hot Blood, was released in August of 2015. Shady Street’s first LP, Revelry, was released on May 27th, 2016.

“FLETCHER with one of the catchiest pop breakouts in 2019” – Billboard

“The singer serving the relatable realness she’d once been searching for” – Wonderland

FLETCHER – who has been heralded as an Artist to Watch by Billboard while simultaneously earning admiration from WonderlandPAPER, TIME, GQ and countless others – hails from a beach town in New Jersey, where she cultivated her verve for music and candid lexicon. Fast-forward years later, her surname has taken on a form of its own. You may recognize FLETCHER from her popular music videos on YouTube or on Spotify where she’s been the cover of New Music Friday three times to date in her fresh career or maybe you’ve seen her on stage – at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Life is Beautiful, or one of the many festivals she has under her belt. The singer-songwriter has already begun carving out a space for herself in pop music, and it’s clear that she has much more to say.

On her forthcoming project – FLETCHER wears her heart on her sleeve, poignantly portraying her  personal story of why you always remember your first for better and for worse. Set for release in August with Capitol Records, the project was executive-produced by Malay (Frank Ocean, Lorde, Sam Smith) and includes her breakthrough hit “Undrunk,” which has amassed more than 100 million streams worldwide since earning the #1 spot on Spotify’s Viral Chart and the most impressive debut in five years for a new artist at pop radio (spending several weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.)

Dividing his time between touring the world, performing his own music and spending the last seven years as the tenor and baritone saxophonist with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band (stepping in for his uncle, the late Clarence Clemons,) He has performed throughout the US, Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland and Europe (also, Mexico, South America, South Africa). Jake has also graced many stages performing alongside a variety of artists including Paul McCartney, Eddie Vedder, Glen Hansard, The Roots and Roger Waters, to name a few.

Ultimately, Clemons has chosen to carry on his career without taking anything for granted. “I process my life through my music and I hope that there’s always growth in whatever I do,” Clemons suggests. “I definitely feel that with this new album. I took some chances on this record that I didn’t dare to before. There’s a bit more angst on this record, both lyrically and musically, but I also feel like I’m honing in on my ability to be honest in a more direct way.”

THE HU – The Gereg Tour at The Stone Pony on Friday, Sept. 27, 2019

Tickets: $20 in advance (plus applicable surcharges), $25 at the door

The HU is a band from Mongolia that blends hard rock and traditional Mongolian throat singing. Their first two videos (“Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem”) immediately went viral garnering the band over 30 million views. The explosive reaction to The HU resulted in a number of features about the band in global media such as NPR, GQ, The Independent, VICE, ET India Times, Playboy Mexico, Jack Canal+Fr, Hong Kong 01, DW as well as a sold out European Headline tour.

The Hu stands for the Mongolian root word for human being, inspiring their original style of music that they call “Hunnu Rock.” The band pull Inspiration from the Hunnu, an ancient Mongolian empire better known as The Huns in western culture. Their music is deeply embedded with their ancient culture, even integrating old Mongolian war cries and poetry into their lyrics.

The group was founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia by their producer Dashka, along with band members Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush. Together they create rock music with traditional Mongolian instrumentation such as the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp), guttural throat singing built around the pillars of heavy rock: distorted guitars, bombastic drums, and aggressive rhythms. All four members have earned Bachelor’s or higher degrees in classical music and have gained several years of touring experience throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim. The band’s inaugural performance as The HU was in June 2019 in their hometown, followed by their first headlining European and UK tour this past June and July which sold out. The band also debuted this summer on several major festivals including in Download Festival, Rock Am Park, and more.

Since the formation of the band, they’ve been working on their debut album entitled The Gereg. The word was used as the first diplomatic “password” by the Mongol empire during the time of Genghis Khan. The album contains nine songs including the recently released “Yuve Yuve Yu,” “Wolf Totem”, and “Shoog Shoog” and is slated for a global release on September 13, 2019 on Eleven Seven Music.

Hi-Tide Recordings presents the return of Messer Chups – from Russia with love – to Asbury Park on their annual Halloween tour! Special guests Black Flamingos open the show with DJ Devil Bat spinning creepy cuts on vinyl between sets!

While Messer Chups‘ mostly instrumental sound is hard to neatly categorize, it’s safe to say that it would be embraced by fans of rockabilly, horror punk, vintage surf records, Italian slasher films, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Pulp Fiction, lounge music, the theremin, The Cramps, and the theme song from The Munsters. Their catchy music combines surf, vintage Russian melodies, rare film samples from the 50s and 60s, scratchy historical recordings, and lounge loops. Live, they explode with garage-punk intensity, all played against a video-collage backdrop of mid-century trashy cult and horror movie clips featuring Russ Meyer and Ed Wood, and superstars like Vampira and Bela Lugosi in a zombie mash-up.

Black Flamingos are an instrumental trio from Asbury Park, NJ – featuring Robbie Butkowski on guitar, Declan O’Connell on bass, and Hi-Tide Recordings founder Vincent Minervino on drums. The band has toured the US and Europe supporting Dick DaleThe VenturesLos StraitjacketsThe 5.6.7.8’s & more, with festival appearances at The HukilauSurf Guitar 101 ConventionSurfer Joe Summer FestivalThe Rhythm Collision Asbury Park Surf Music Festival. The band was also featured by the iconic Norman’s Rare Guitars in Los Angeles.

with special guest John Kadlecik on guitar

Tickets: $25 in advance (plus applicable surcharges), $30 at the door

Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B-3 organ, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become “Jam Band Music”. From blues to funk to rock to jazz, he serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up.

Melvin Seals and JGB bring an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. John Kadlecik (Furthur, DSO, Golden Gate Wingmen) will be on lead guitar and vocal duties with John-Paul McLean’s savory bass, Pete Lavezzoli’s hearty drums and, of course, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards. Along with Sunshine Becker and Lady Chi on backup vocals, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenge genre boundaries. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours.

Adding Melvin’s rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him “Master of the Universe.” He continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself!

    MYSTERY SKULLS

Mystery Skulls is an electronic dance-oriented neo-soul and vintage disco-influenced outfit centered around lead singer/songwriter Luis Dubuc. Dubuc was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela until he was eight, when his family moved to Toronto, where he fell in love with dance music as well as hip-hop and metal.

After moving to Dallas, he played drums for the metal band Thirty Called Arson and formed the electronic pop project The Secret Handshake, whose 2009 album, My Name Up in Lights, reached No. 7 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.

In 2011, Dubuc ended The Secret Handshake to focus on the more dance-oriented Mystery Skulls, which took its name from an episode of the Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark? That year, Dubuc moved to Los Angeles and released Mystery Skulls’ self-titled debut EP, which featured the single “Amazing,” after which he signed to Warner Bros. in 2013 and collaborated with Chic’s Nile Rodgers on the project’s debut album, Forever, which was released in 2014.

Dubuc returned in 2017 with the single “Music,” the first taste from his sophomore full-length, One of Us.

Music of Phish for Kids Halloween Spooktacular

The Rock and Roll Playhouse, a family concert series hosted at historic music venues across the country, allows kids to “move, play and sing while listening to works from the classic-rock canon” (NY Times). Performing songs created by the most iconic musicians in rock history, The Rock and Roll Playhouse band offers its core audience of families with children age ten and under games, movement, stories and an opportunity to rock out in an effort to educate children and explore their creativity. The Rock and Roll Playhouse is an early and often first introduction to a child’s lifelong journey with live music and rock and roll.

This concert for kids and families shares the music of the artist named above with a new generation of music lovers, but is not associated with or endorsed by the artist. All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.

The Rock and Roll Playhouse knows that little ears are sensitive, so we turn down the volume at our shows.  However, all kids experience music differently and you may find that your child is more comfortable wearing hearing protection earmuffs.

Clad in their trademark lucha libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows. As seen most recently as the studio and live backing band for Nick Lowe.

    HIRIE

    with RDGLDGRN, Kash’d Out

Hirie — the frontwoman of the exhilarating reggae band HIRIE — grew up a global citizen. Her father worked for the United Nations and she was born in the Philippines, spent years in Italy, before her family settled in Hawaii, which became her spiritual home.

San Diego’s seven-piece band HIRIE is ready to offer a global spiritual uplift. Melding the balmy island touches of its singer’s beloved home — as symbolized by its moniker’s first letter, a “H” for “Hawaii,” with that feeling of irie , the award-winning group offers a soundtrack of hope. Now, with its masterful most recent album, Wandering Soul , brimming with invigorating female-fronted shamanistic reggae an oasis of positivity is just an album away.

Wandering Soul’s lush construct reflects this depth. The songs feature chord sequences that have a sophisticated, tension and release accessibility. The musicianship is high-level restraint, showcasing that point of mature virtuosity where laying back implies instrumental prowess. The album’s trippy production — the bulk of it courtesy of Danny Kalb (Beck, Ben Harper, Sia) — replete with adventurous textured passages, heady dub segues, and subtle psychedelic flourishes, make it a rare headphone experience for a pop oriented record.

The album opens with the smoldering and ambitious title track — a sonic journey through heartfelt longing, and heady dub passages. The militant “Renegade” features Nahko Bear of Nahko and Medicine For The People and boasts stately horns, simmering grooves, and call-to-arms individuality against the massification of culture. The personal “Melody of a Broken Heart” and “You Won’t Be Alone” shine a light on personal domestic struggles. “I wrote ‘You Won’t Be Alone’ for my daughter with the hopes that she understands my life when she hears me on the radio. I hope she understands how much I love her and how I can be a role model by showing her she can be anything she wants,” Hirie confides. The sleek futuristic electronic textures of “Boom Fire” represents HIRIE’s party vibe and exudes vivaciousness of in the moment HIRIE living.

Hirie is currently working on her third full length album due out in 2019.

Reflecting on the power of HIRIE, Hirie shares this story: “I met a fan who was suffering from six tumors. He shared with me ‘Your music is the reason I get out of bed, you’re my medicine.’ That drives me to push this movement forward to share conscious music. I feel a responsibility and a duty to share a positive message.”

Poised to take bluegrass in bold new directions, singer/songwriter/guitarist Billy Strings is quickly gaining attention for his incendiary live performances and imbuing his take on Americana with distinctive bursts of psychedelic virtuosity. While deeply reverent of the roots of traditional bluegrass music, which his father shared with him as a boy, Strings learned his high-energy performing skills by playing fleet-fingered guitar solos in a heavy metal band in his native Michigan. While he has matured as a player, singer and songwriter in his own right, and re-embraced the music his father introduced him to, Strings has applied the intensity of heavy metal to bluegrass. The end results, as demonstrated on his most recent release, Turmoil & Tinfoil, provide a fresh jolt to the genre. Look for a new album from Billy Strings this fall.

Growing up in Florida, Ghostemane (Eric Whitney) was originally a guitar player for hardcore and doom metal bands. Whitney was introduced to rap music when he was the guitarist in the hardcore punk band Nemesis and a bandmate introduced him to Memphis rap.

Whitney graduated from university after studying astrophysics. In 2015, Whitney moved to Los Angeles. Meeting up with JGRXXN, Whitney joined his collective Schemaposse which included artists such as the now-deceased Lil Peep and Craig Xen. In April 2016, Schemaposse disbanded. Whitney began to associate with fellow Florida rapper Pouya. Their friendship resulted in 1000 Rounds, a song that has amassed over 50 million streams across platforms.

In 2018 Whitney released his 10th album, N / O / I / S / E (No One Is Safe from Evil). The album has a very dark and aggressive style and it deals with themes of self-harm, self-mutilation, agoraphobia, and many other issues Ghostemane has dealt with personally. It is a step forward for his genre-bending sound—an energy that started in the underground and has led to hundreds of millions of streams across his catalog.

Ghostemane draws his influences from a vast array of content including psychedelics, Nine Inch Nails, Outkast, medieval magic, occultism, and Ancient Egyptian books.

    Magic Bean/Mungion

Magic Beans have steadily built upon their national notoriety in a short period of time with a distinguishable sound that is uniquely their own. Hailing from Denver, the band’s combo of funk/soul/rock has quickly set themselves apart from the pack as one of the state’s premier acts. The Beans made their Red Rocks debut in April of 2019, prior to releasing their new album, Off Leash, on June 21st, 2019. The new album, “Off Leash”, is a testament to the group shedding the restraints of genre based music in favor of embracing different elements found across the musical realm. It was also an exercise in pushing the band’s sound forward, building upon the last release as opposed to simply recreating the sound. Magic Beans use analog and vintage instrumentation to get a style that is both familiar but original. A B3 Organ here, a Wah guitar there – Vintage Synthesizers, and 808 drums (to name a few) make the music reminiscent of your favorite songs, while still sounding fresh. The Beans make music that moves your mind and body, with something for everyone from the audiophiles to the everyday music fan.

Since their inception in Spring of 2015, Mungion (pronounced mung-yin) is quickly becoming known for their undeniably explosive and charismatic live shows. The Chicago-based four-piece is rooted in their ambitious compositions and improvisational ability. Drawing inspiration from a wide array of musical styles, they create a raucous, yet jubilant sound all of their own.  Known for their whimsical songs and goofy stage antics, Mungion’s joyous presence is a natural extension of its members, making for live performances that are infectiously lighthearted and deeply sincere. However, underlying the band’s quirky nature is a tremendous amount of virtuosity across all of its members. Combined, this talent and playfulness emboldens the group to be fearless in the studio and on stage. Mungion is guaranteed to have you smiling ear to ear and leaving wanting more.

    Del McCoury Band
    with The Dark City Strings

    Doors: 7:00pm
    Show: 8:00pm

Even among the pantheon of music’s finest artists, Del McCoury stands alone. From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honkytonks, rural schoolhouse stages, and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry to the present-day culture-buzz of viral videos and digital streams, Del is the living link. On primetime and late-night television talk shows, there is Del. From headlining sold-out concerts to music festivals of all genres, including one carrying his namesake, there is Del. Where audiences number in the tens of thousands, and admirers as diverse as country-rock icon Steve Earle and jamband royalty Phish count as two among hundreds, there is Del.

Emerging from humble beginnings in York County, PA nearly eighty years ago, Del was not the likeliest of candidates for legendary status. As a teen, he was captivated by the banjo playing of one of its masters, Earl Scruggs, and decided he’d be a banjo picker, too. The Baltimore/Washington, D.C. bar scene of the early 1960s was lively and rough. Del caught a break. More than a break, really. It was an opportunity of a lifetime; joining Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in early 1963. Considered the Father of Bluegrass, Monroe transformed McCoury, moving him from the banjo to guitar, anointing him lead singer, and providing him with a priceless trove of bluegrass tutelage direct from the source.

Countless hours of recording sessions and miles of tireless touring dotted the decades. Del carried on, and carried with him the hallowed traditions of the form and its dedicated following. The passing years became certificates of authenticity. So, in the sea of grunge and R&B that dominated the music scene of the mid-1990s, it was special, perhaps even startling, to see: There was Del.

The band’s evolution through three drummers has now brought theNEWDEAL closer to its original direction. “With Davide, it’s a bit like ‘coming back home’, as he was the drummer that inspired our original direction back in 1998 when the three of us played an impromptu gig together in Guelph, Ontario.  Each of the band’s drummers has brought something unique to theNEWDEAL, and with Davide we’re reaching back to move forward with the organic-infused improvisation that has long-inspired a big part of theNEWDEAL sound,” explains keyboardist Jamie Shields.
