Asbury Park Film Initiative presents the Second Annual AP Surf Film Festival on Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21. The fest will open with A FLY IN THE CHAMPAGE. Pitting the world’s two best surfers against each other on a remote island in the Mentawais, A Fly In The Champagne documents the intense rivalry between Kelly Slater and Andy Irons as it comes to a head on Kandui Island. With some of the top cinematographers in the business behind the cameras and action sports personality Sal Masakela helping to produce the film, it’s a must see.
Closing night feature on Sunday, June 21is MUSICA SURFICA. This award-winning film involves a unique gathering of classical musicians and surfers, with a purpose to opening minds to new ideas by demonstrating the benefits of taking risks in their art. Shot on King Island in Southern Australia, the documentary follows one man’s creative journey, Richard Tognetti, leading violinist and Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as he seeks new inspiration from traditional and classical music. He teams up with Derek Hynd, one of the world’s most influential surfers, who challenges him (and 2 time world champion, Tom Carroll, under 18 World No 2 Heath Joske and others) to ride an un-finned surfboard, which demands fresh thinking, or ancient methods, to keep control.
Proceeds from the festival will benefit Surfrider Foundation. In addition to the feature films we will screen local and award-winnng surf shorts and more! All screenings will take place at the Paramount Theater, 1300 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park Boardwalk. Screening tickets are $5.00 and available at the Paramount Box Office one hour prior to showtimes. Full Schedule below.
The weekend will also bring live music and surfing clinics hosted by Langosta Lounge and Lightly Salted Surf Shop.
